(Free School) Map Oak Commons
Map Oak Commons - an introduction to using digital maps to communicate about the earth
what's the class?
this class is generally speaking, an intro to GIS - geographic information systems - computer based mapping.
more specifically, though, this is a class about accessing and utilizing many different sources of information about our planet, and how we can use these skills to research and communicate revolutionary ideas, and connect our everyday experiences to the broader context of our big mama, the earth.
when is it?
Saturday may 16, 1-5 or so.
date is firm, times may shift.
what will I learn?
we will explore a broad sampling of different ways of obtaining, making and using spatial data.. as many as we can comfortably fit into 3-4 hours. you will leave feeling confident and excited about using at least one new tool.
as a bonus, if you've never used a Linux operating system, you will get to use Linux.
how do I sign up?
this class will work best with 10-15 people who are comfortable using a computer.

what should I bring?
everyone or every group will need a laptop. if you don't have your own laptop, we may have a couple loaners we can pass out for the class.
if you don't like using a mouse and keyboard yourself, you can still have fun in this class if you like telling other people what to click on and can team up with a friend.
I already know how to do some crazy stuff with maps
